It was a busy morning, about 8:30 am, when an elderly gentleman arrived to have sutures (缝合线) removed from his hand. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. I had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would be able to see him. I saw him look at his watch; since I was not busy with another patient, I examined his wound carefully. After being examined, it was found to have been well healed (愈合), so I talked to one of other doctors, removed his sutures and tied up his wound.
While taking care of his wound, we began our conversation. I asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me that he needed to go to the nursing home to have breakfast with his wife. I then asked about her wife’s health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a patient of Alzheimer’s disease.
As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was and that she had not recognized him for five years.I was surprised, and asked him, “And you still go there every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?” He smiled as he patted my hand and said, “She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.” I had to hold back tears as he left, and thought, “That is the kind of love I want in my life.”
True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

People from East Asia are likely to have more difficulty than those from European countries in telling the difference between a face that looks fearful and one that looks surprised. Now a new report published online in Current Biology, explains why.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” said Rachael E. Jack of The University of Glasgow. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth to the same degree, while Easterners are good at noticing the eyes and paying no attention to the mouth. This means that Easterners have difficulty in recognizing facial expressions that look similar around the eye area.”
In the study, the researchers let 13 Western people and 13 East Asian people observe pictures of expressive faces which were put into groups: “happy”, “sad”, “surprised”, “fearful”, “disgusted (厌恶的)”, “angry”, or “calm”. The faces were standardized (标准化的) according to the so-called Facial Action Coding System (FACS) which says each expression displays a specific combination (结合) of facial muscles typically connected with each feeling. The researchers then compared how correctly volunteers read those facial expressions using their particular eye movements.
It turned out that Easterners concentrated much greater attention on the eyes and made obviously more mistakes than Westerners did. The difference in eye movements that they show is probably a sign of cultural specificity (独特性) in facial expressions, according to Rachael E. Jack.
A survey of Eastern and Western emoticons (表情符号) certainly supports that idea. Western emoticons mainly use the mouth to express emotional states, for example, “: )” for “happy” and “: (” for “sad”, Rachael noted, while Eastern emoticons use the eyes, e.g. “^.^” for “happy” and “;-;” for “sad”.
According to the new report, human communication of emotion is a lot more difficult to understand than experts have believed. As a result, facial expressions that once were considered recognizable everywhere cannot be used to dependably express emotion in cross-cultural situations.
61. According to the passage, facial expressions that look similar around the eye area are ____.
A. “excited” and “happy”                   B. “surprised” and “angry”
C. “bored” and “sad”                              D. “fearful” and “surprised”
62. Why   do   East   Asians   have   more difficulty in understanding facial expressions?
A. Because they are inexperienced in how to recognize different facial expressions.
B. Because they never received training to understand different facial expressions.
C. Because they are used to paying attention to part of the facial expressions.
D. Because they have formed the habit of looking at the speakers’ mouth during talks.
63. The researchers put different facial expressions into groups by people’s ____.
A. facial muscles                                    B. characters of looks
C. eye movements                                   D. shapes of mouths
64. We can learn that Western emoticons mainly show their emotion by using ____.
A. eyes                        B. noses
C. mouths                     D. signs
65. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Problems    in    recognizing    facial expressions.
B. Facial expressions — not global.
C. How    to    read    different   facial expressions.
D. What influence FACS brings to us.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀地) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
66. The discovery shows that Westerners ____.
A. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth
B. consider facial expressions universally reliable
C. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways
D. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
67. What were the people asked to do in the study?
A. To make a face at each other.
B. To get their faces impressive.
C. To classify some face pictures.
D. To observe the researchers’ faces.
68. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The participants in the study.
B. The researchers of the study.
C. The errors made during the study.
D. The data collected from the study.
69. In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to __
A. do translation more successfully
B. study the mouth more frequently
C. examine the eyes more attentively
D. read facial expressions more correctly
70. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Eye as the Window to the Soul
B. Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions
C. Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills
D. How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding

My father was 44 and knew he wasn’t going to male it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.
Since the day 1 was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One it always times out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a time-killer. But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.” Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didn’t know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when I’ve felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask. “Is this what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?”
A long way from 12 now, I realize hew would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though, I’ve come to believe he’d want me to move on to what comes next: to be proud of and believe in, somebody else. It’s time to start writing my own letters to my children. Our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don’t hold back because they’re afraid to fail. They’re only afraid of failing us. They don’t worry about being disappointed. Their fear — as mine was until my father’s letter — is of being a disappointment.
Give your children permission to succeed. They’re waiting for you to believe in them. I always knew way parents loved me. But trust me: That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts; “Don’t worry; you’ll do something great.” Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.

Legend has it that a young man was wandering in a forest to find some water. Finally he reached a spring of clear water,[16]____ was very sweet. The young man happily filled his leather container with water to bring it back to his old teacher. [17]____ a four-day journey he presented the water to the old man who took a deep drink, smiled [18]____ (warm) and thanked his student a great deal for the water. Then the young man returned to his home [19]____ happiness.
Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. He spat [20]____ out, saying it was awful. Because of the old leather container, the water apparently had become stale (变味的). [21]____(confuse)by his teacher’s behavior, the student challenged his teacher, “Master, the water was smelly. [22]____ why did you pretend to like it?”
The teacher replied, “You only tasted the water [23]____. I tasted the love. The water was actually a container for an act of kindness. And nothing could be [24]____ (sweet).”
Unfortunately, most people only think much of the practical thing given instead of the feeling included in it. What we should do [25]____ (be) to remind ourselves of the beauty of feelings. After all, gifts from the heart are really gifts of the heart.

41A1How to Write
It is well-known that body language plays an important part in our life. Smiles are also very important. There is no doubt that the smile is one of the most universal languages in the world. ...

Smile Power

Like a flower with a pleasant smell, your smile can draw people close enough to see the inside of you. That’s Smile Power. A smile has the power to give off the qualities that make you beautiful on the inside — kindness, friendship, honesty, respect, patience and self-control.
[1]______ Let your smile be an invitation for others to get to know the great person behind the smile. Then let people see that your smile doesn’t stop at your mouth. It goes all the way to your heart.
Be like a flower. Let your Smile Power bloom (开花)!
Young people are exposed (暴露) to millions of messages about who they are and how they should relate to others. Many of those messages do little to encourage the development of characteristics such as kindness, honesty and self-control.
[2]______ The answer is simple: take something very important with you — a smile.
Once you have succeeded in making eye contact, you should smile. When you smile, you send the message that you are a happy person, someone who is easy of approach, confident and friendly. If you make eye contact, but don’t smile, you will send the message that you are cold, critical or aloof (疏远的).
Wearing a smile when you are among strangers is the best way to invite them to get to know you. [3]______ It tells people that you have a positive outlook and that you are smiling and attractive on the inside. Your face is the first thing people look at when they meet you for the first time, so why not let it advertise what a great person you are? [4]______
As you begin to smile at people more, you will notice how a smile attracts people like a magnet (磁铁). When you smile at them, people will smile back, and the connection you feel will energize you for the rest of the day. [5]______ And once you feel the difference, you will never want to be without a smile again.
Task
Fill in the blanks with suitable sentences.
A. What is the best way to walk into a crowded room by yourself?
B. Smiling is as important to your well-
being as breathing.
C. A smile sends a message that you are friendly and easy to communicate with.
D. Give smiles away like flowers.
E. Why not turn on your Smile Power?
