In order to fully motivate students， learning desire and arouse their aspiration for knowledge, teachers and students should play different roles in English class. So a harmonious relationship between teachers and students and a friendly atmosphere is a must to ensure a successful English class. What kind of relationship should be between teachers and students in English class? Personally I think the relationship as follows.
First, teachers and students should be close friends and respectful to each other. Teachers should try their best to make class atmosphere relaxing and friendly, so that each student likes to join in class activities. Smile to your students as often as possible; say “thank you” to them whenever students do you a favor; make yourself worthy of trust so that students believe in you and want to make friends with you. They will be interested in your class and would like to cooperate with you in class and follow your advice outside of class. In this way you can achieve your teaching aims successfully.
Next, equality in personal dignity. For the middle school students, They are full of fantastic ideas.So teachers need be more patient with them. Teachers should remind them what they can do and what they cannot do. Teachers should never use abusive or insulting words such as troublemaker, bad boy, devil and so on. When they commit an error, Teachers need help them remedy their mistakes or persuade them into trying to abandon their bad habits step and step. Teachers should respect every student and their dignity deserves respect. In an English class, students have mixed ability to acquire English. For some higher level students, they perform better than some lower level students. It is natural for teachers to employ good, well-done, sensational and some other complimentary remarks to speak high of their performances and encourage them to do even better.
As for some lower level students, they are slower at acquiring something new and usually get lower marks in examinations. Teachers should never look down upon them but help them to build up confidence. If they are treated in equally or discriminated by teachers, they will consider themselves as backboard or stupid. They could take for granted that they were born good-for-nothing. Thus they lose interest in their lessons. The correct way for teachers to educate students is that they need show respect to each student’s dignity in every aspect and encourage them to work hard on their subjects so that every one of them gets some kind of improvement in their studies.
Third, the relationship between teachers and students is waiter and client. The waiter’s duty is to serve clients and try to satisfy client’s，demand and help him enjoy their meal. Teachers’ duty is serve students and provide a good environment for students to focus their energy on learning and be interested in their lessons.
Now can teachers achieve such aim?
Help students solve some problems. Due to various reasons, some students have been poor in the English subject since the very beginning. They are in fear of it psychologically. They do not believe they can learn it well no matter how hard they try. Some even want to drop it. For these students, teachers have to help them overcome their psychological obstacles and also help them find the correct way of learning it. Let students understand an interest is one is best teacher and that no one can teach you something you do not want to learn and that learning a language involves creating good habits and being persistent. Only after students become interested in English can they learn it well.
Teachers’ assessments usually play an important role in their studies. Right judgments of students, work provide students with encouragement and confidence which promote their studies. Students level for their work varies from student to student even if they are in the same class. So teachers need be careful with their judgments about each student’s work so as to let every one of the students benefit a lot from the judgments. |
